Physical modeling of spikes during the volcanic tsunami generation

چکیده
Tsunamis generated by underwater volcanic eruptions are physically modeled in a large three-dimensional wave basin. A unique pneumatic tsunami generator (VTG) was deployed at the bottom of basin to generate tsunamis with repeatable source parameters under controlled physical conditions. The Froude number defined VTG eruption velocity and water depth allows model real-world events from slow mud-volcanoes explosive eruptions. generates radial N-waves prescribed vertical stroke motions Initial surfaces reconstructed for daylighting scenarios. Smooth dome shapes observed during submarine generation, which is followed trough formation source. concentric spike specific range depths, superposition an inward propagating circular bore on top generator. can be clustered different ranges dimensionless parameter. With increasing parameter, pattern transitions through three distinct categories: smooth spike, rough splash spike. height tip dependent parameters. maximum values regime among all tested experimental

Numerical simulation of a tsunami event during the 1996 volcanic eruption in Karymskoye lake, Kamchatka, Russia
Karymskoye caldera lake is a nearly circular body of water with a diameter of approximately 4 km and a depth of up to 60 m. The sublacustrine, Surtseyan-type eruption in the lake on 2–3 January 1996 included a series of underwater explosions. A field survey conducted the following summer showed signs of tsunami wave runup around the entire coastline of the lake, with a maximum of 29 m runup at ...
متن کاملNumerical simulation of tsunami generation by cold volcanic mass flows at Augustine Volcano, Alaska
Many of the world’s active volcanoes are situated on or near coastlines. During eruptions, diverse geophysical mass flows, including pyroclastic flows, debris avalanches, and lahars, can deliver large volumes of unconsolidated debris to the ocean in a short period of time and thereby generate tsunamis. Deposits of both hot and cold volcanic mass flows produced by eruptions of Aleutian arc volca...
متن کاملPhysical Modeling of Steel Delivery during Thin Slab Continuous Casting
A full scale physical model of a thin slab caster with a four-hole design submerged entry nozzle (SEN) was constructed. On the basis of the dimensionless Reynolds and Froude similitude criteria, the fluid flow in a full-scale model is similar to that of the actual system and, hence, the data obtained from the water model can be applied to the actual system. In order to determine the optimum ope...
متن کاملModeling Volcanic Clouds: a Physical, 3D and Efficient Method
This paper presents an efficient method based on physical laws to model volcanic clouds. Some physical models have been proposed for simulating volcanic clouds [Woods 1988], but most of the previous models are only two or less dimensional or need huge calculation times. Our approach achieves a physical, 3D and efficient modeling of volcanic clouds. The dynamics of volcanic clouds is modeled usi...
